Interview of the month - November 2007

Ruth Bendig

How long have you been knitting?
I started when I was quite young (around 8?). I put the needles aside when I went to college, and picked them up again in earnest four years ago.

Who taught you?
My mother.

Do you have a favorite technique?
I get an inordinate amount of pleasure out of cabling, and do so was very interested in learning how to cable without a cable needle. I only use a cable needle if the yarn is very slippery or the cable is so intricate that dropping a stitch would lead to disaster.

Which material do you prefer?
Wool. I will and do knit with cotton, but it hurts my hands.

What inspires you?
I love color, and will buy yarn even if I don't have a project in mind for it if the color appeals. I am especially fond of anything in the red family.

Tell us about something you've knit that you're really satisfied with! (A picture of said thing would be lovely, and if you want to tell us about more than one thing, that's fine too!)
I knit a lot of baby things, because they are (usually) cute and (almost always) quick to knit, so there's almost instant gratification.

Last year a good friend of mine had her first daughter after four boys, and I made her the "Busy Lizzie" sweater from Rowan's Tadpoles and Tiddlers. The project combined soft yarn with an interesting stitch pattern (smocking), and I was pleased enough with the end result that I plan to make another, this time for my own infant daughter.
(I lost my picture of this project when my hard drive crashed last year, but you can see it here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/66064893@N00/315648855/in/set-72057594049376045/.)

What does knitting mean to you?
It is my primary creative outlet, and a release. I am a full-time mother to four children, and life is hectic. Not only is knitting something I can do to pass the time while waiting for the children to finish their activities (it is a life-saver at soccer games, swim meets and doctor's appointments!), I find that it relaxes me.

Do you knit together with others on a regular basis?
Yes, a group of us get together every week to knit. We didn't know each other well when the group started two years ago, but these ladies are now among my closest friends.

Do you work with knitting in any way, or is it a hobby only?
I used to test knit samples for a yarn company, but had to stop when I got pregnant last year, as I was too ill -- and then too tired -- to keep to a deadline. Now I just knit for myself.

Do you have a website and/or blog?
